Men’s Sportswear and Activewear: How to Build a Kit That Works

Choosing mens sportswear well is about matching your clothes to how you actually move. The wrong kit chafes, overheats, restricts, or falls apart after a few washes, while the right kit disappears: you forget about it and focus on the training. This guide covers the fabrics, fits and pieces that matter for gym sessions, running, and everyday activewear, so you can build a kit bag that works as hard as you do.

    Start with Fabric, Not Fashion

Most modern sportswear is made from polyester blends, nylon, or merino wool, and each has a job. Polyester wicks sweat away from the skin and dries quickly, which makes it the default for gym tops and running shirts. Nylon is tougher and slightly softer, so it appears in shorts and leggings that take more wear. Merino wool, despite being a natural fibre, regulates temperature well and resists odour, which makes it a strong choice for base layers and for training in changeable weather.

Cotton, by contrast, is a poor training fabric: it absorbs sweat, stays wet, and gets heavy. A cotton tee is fine for walking to the gym, but for an actual session, a technical fabric will feel dramatically better. When you compare two similar-looking tops, check the fabric composition on the label before the price: a well-made polyester training top will outperform a fashionable cotton one every time.

    Building a Gym Kit

A solid gym kit starts with a training top that fits close without clinging, shorts or joggers with a secure waistband, and shoes suited to your training style. For lifting, flat-soled shoes give a stable base; for classes and cardio, a cushioned trainer works better. Our guide to mens shoe categories breaks down footwear styles in detail, and designer shoes for men covers premium options if you want one pair that also works outside the gym.

Layering matters in the gym too. A black hoodie or a lightweight hoodie is ideal for warming up and for the walk home, while a tank top suits hot sessions once you are warmed up. Avoid hoodies with heavy drawstrings or metal details that catch on equipment, and choose tops without loose fabric around the waist that rides up during floor work.

    Running Kit: What Actually Matters

Running kit follows the same fabric rules, with a few extras. Seams should be flat to avoid chafing on longer runs, and shorts should have a liner or a secure pocket for a key and phone. A lightweight, breathable top with reflective details is worth prioritising if you run in low light, and a thin windproof jacket covers the gap between summer and winter running.

Shorts deserve more thought than they usually get. Split shorts suit experienced runners, while longer, lined shorts suit most beginners and gym-to-run sessions. Our guide to mens shorts and t-shirts covers summer combinations, and printed tees are a good option for runners who want a training top that also works as everyday wear.

    Fit: Close, Not Tight

Activewear should sit close to the body without restricting movement. Too loose, and fabric bunches, rides up, or catches; too tight, and it restricts breathing and movement, especially around the shoulders and waist. Test fit by moving: raise your arms overhead, squat, and twist. If a top rides up or shorts dig in, size up or try a different cut rather than assuming it will stretch with wear.

Length matters too. Training tops that end at the waistband tend to ride up during floor exercises, so a slightly longer cut is usually better. Shorts should allow a full squat without pulling, and leggings should stay in place without a constant need to adjust. These small fit details are what separate kit you reach for from kit that stays in the drawer.

    Activewear Beyond the Gym

Modern activewear is designed to work beyond training, and that versatility is part of its appeal. A clean, dark training top with well-fitting joggers and smart trainers passes easily for a casual day out, and technical fabrics travel well because they dry quickly and resist creasing. The trick is to keep the look simple: dark colours, minimal logos, and clean lines read as intentional rather than just-gym clothes.

That said, not every piece crosses over. Very bright running shoes, heavily branded tops, and ultra-light race kit look out of place away from training. Build a small rotation of neutral pieces for everyday activewear, and keep the specialist kit for the sessions it was designed for.

    Care and Replacement

Technical fabrics last longer when washed cool, without fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces wicking. Turn printed tops inside out, skip the tumble dryer where possible, and hang kit to dry. Odour that survives washing usually means bacteria built up in the fabric; a sports-specific wash or a soak in a vinegar solution before washing often fixes it.

Replace training shoes when the cushioning feels flat or the tread wears unevenly, and replace tops and shorts when seams fail, elastic gives out, or the fabric no longer wicks. Good sportswear is an investment in comfort, and looking after it properly means it will last far longer than the cheapest options.

    Putting Your Kit Together

Start with the sessions you actually do: two or three training tops, two bottoms, one pair of shoes suited to your main activity, and one layer for warming up. Add running-specific pieces only if you run regularly, and build from there rather than buying a whole wardrobe at once. Fit and fabric come first, brand second, and the best kit is the kit you forget you are wearing.

Mens sportswear has improved enormously in recent years, and there is no longer any need to train in uncomfortable or ill-fitting clothes. Choose technical fabrics, check the fit by moving, and invest in a small rotation of quality pieces: your training will feel better for it, and your kit bag will finally make sense.
